A beautiful piece of mid-century jewelry, this vintage jade ring pairs the unmistakable glow of green jade with an elegant 14 kt. yellow gold setting. Dating to approximately 1950–1960, the ring features a smooth, highly polished oval jade cabochon surrounded by graceful vintage-inspired gold detailing.
Measuring approximately 18 mm long by 13 mm wide, the ring has enough presence to make a statement while maintaining the refined proportions associated with jewelry of the period. The rich green stone contrasts beautifully against the warmth of the high-polished yellow gold, creating a timeless look that works just as beautifully today as it did more than half a century ago.
What Does “Jade” Mean?
Jade is actually a name used for two different natural gemstones: jadeite and nephrite. Although they can look very similar, they are different minerals.
Jadeite is the rarer of the two and can occur in beautiful shades of green as well as lavender, white, yellow, orange, red and even black. The most prized vivid emerald-green jadeite is traditionally referred to as Imperial Jade.
Nephrite is another natural form of jade and has been treasured for thousands of years. It is known for its exceptional toughness and often displays softer, creamier greens, although its color can range from nearly white to very dark green.
You may occasionally see the word “jadite”, but the correct mineralogical spelling is jadeite.
Where Does Jade Come From?
Jade has been valued by cultures around the world for thousands of years. It has particularly deep historical importance in China, where jade became associated with beauty, virtue, prosperity, protection and longevity.
Natural jade deposits are found in several parts of the world. Historically significant sources include Myanmar (Burma), particularly for fine jadeite, along with regions of China, Central Asia, Russia, Canada, Guatemala and New Zealand. Myanmar has long been one of the world's most important sources of gem-quality jadeite.
Because this is a vintage piece, the ring also carries something new jewelry simply cannot reproduce—the character and history of a jewel that has already lived through generations.
